AEW Forbidden Door: MJF's World Title Opponent Remains Undetermined Amid Card Additions

AEW World Champion MJF's challenger for the upcoming Forbidden Door pay-per-view on Sunday, June 28, remains the most anticipated announcement. Mark Briscoe, Andrade El Idolo, and Kevin Knight are prominent possibilities, with a potential four-way bout or an NJPW talent still on the table.

MJF's Potential Challengers

The storyline leading to Forbidden Door has seen MJF engaged in various interactions with these three potential challengers:

Mark Briscoe

MJF and Mark Briscoe had a heated feud last year. MJF secured the victory in round one of their encounters. Briscoe subsequently evened the score in a Tables 'n' Tacks match. Briscoe is actively trying to talk his way into a rubber match to definitively settle their rivalry. However, MJF has publicly expressed his view that Briscoe, whom he refers to as 'Dat Boy', lacks the star power necessary for a world title opportunity.

I’m literally never gonna wrestle you again. I’m the most powerful voice in AEW. What I say goes. Cute promo though.

MJF posted this statement on June 4, 2026, in response to Briscoe's pursuit of another match.

Andrade El Idolo

MJF has never wrestled Andrade El Idolo in a one on one match. Despite orbiting each other in storylines for months, the two have yet to exchange physical blows, building anticipation for a potential confrontation. Their rivalry has been primarily fueled by spicy trash talk exchanged both on screen and across social media platforms.

Seriously!!! MJF, you're smart: you do whatever it takes to avoid facing me. ⏳ put…to

Andrade “El Idolo” The Real Latino Man! directed this comment at MJF on X (formerly Twitter) on June 4, 2026, highlighting MJF’s perceived avoidance.

Kevin Knight

Kevin Knight holds the distinction of being the last man to beat MJF in the ring. Their series is currently tied at one win apiece. MJF took round one of their encounters to defend the world title. Knight, known as 'The Jet', bested MJF in round two to defend the TNT title. Since then, Kevin Knight has been vocal about his ambition to become a double champion, holding both the TNT and AEW World Championships.

Energy switched⚡️

Kevin Knight ケビン・ナイト posted this on June 4, 2026, following his victory over MJF. MJF later responded to the ongoing chatter:

Try an energy where you keep my name out of your mouth.

MJF posted this on June 5, 2026, aimed at Knight and other competitors discussing him on social media.

Current Forbidden Door Card Details

As of now, the card for Forbidden Door has only two official matches confirmed, and at this moment, only one quarter of the participants in these matches are known. The event will feature the finals of both the men’s and women’s Owen Hart Cup tournaments.

  • Owen Hart Cup Men’s Final: Will Ospreay will face an as yet undetermined opponent. Ospreay’s opponent will be the winner of a semifinal match between Swerve Strickland and Brody King.
  • Owen Hart Cup Women’s Final: The participants for this final are still to be determined. The semifinals for the women's tournament are set as Mercedes Moné wrestling Hazuki, who hails from Stardom, and Athena meeting the winner of a contest between Skye Blue and Sareee.

Other Championship Match Possibilities

Beyond the Owen Hart Cup, several other championship scenarios are developing for Forbidden Door, aligning with the interpromotional nature of the event:

  • AEW Women’s World Championship: Thekla, representing Stardom, is calling out for a challenger to defend the AEW Women’s World Championship.
  • AEW International Championship: Konosuke Takeshita is slated to challenge Kyle Fletcher, aiming for revenge with the AEW International Championship on the line.
  • AEW World Tag Team Championship: Adam Copeland and Christian Cage are possibly defending their AEW World Tag Team Championship against either The Dogs or The Young Bucks.

Several other champions are also openly advertising for challengers from NJPW, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), or Stardom, making good on the Forbidden Door vibe. These include:

  • Continental Champion Jon Moxley
  • National Champion Mark Davis
  • Women’s Tag Team Champions Divine Dominion
  • World Trios Champions The Conglomeration

The original concept for the Forbidden Door event emphasized talent exchanges with NJPW, and the current landscape leaves many opportunities for interpromotional dream matches across various international promotions to fill out the card.
