AJ Styles has stated his opinion that Sami Zayn should not be considered a transitional champion in WWE. Styles believes Zayn is fully capable of holding a world championship title and making a lasting impact.

Zayn recently secured the WWE Championship at Night of Champions 2026, defeating both Cody Rhodes and Gunther. His first title defense is scheduled against Cody Rhodes on the upcoming WWE Raw.

Speaking on The Phenomenally Retro Podcast, Styles discussed Zayn's championship win. He expressed a preference for title reigns not to be short-lived, emphasizing that frequent changes are not beneficial for business. Styles noted that the uncertainty surrounding Zayn's next challenger for SummerSlam, one of WWE's major premium live events is an interesting aspect of the ongoing storyline.

I don’t want to see a transitional champion. I think that Sami’s more than capable of pulling off being a world champion and totally being the underdog here. But I don’t know what the next part of the story is. The great thing about that is that’s a good thing. That keeps me interested in what’s going to happen, the buildup to SummerSlam. That’s a good thing where I’m not so sure what’s going to happen. You got people worried about that Sami’s just going to be a transitional champion. He’s gonna win it just to lose it to who knows. I don’t think that is the best way to go about doing the storyline. I think there’s some magic to be made and I wish I was smart enough to figure it out. But I’m glad I’m not because I want to enjoy wrestling.

Styles acknowledged that the speculation about Zayn potentially losing the title soon keeps fans engaged but suggested that a more substantial reign would be best for building the narrative moving forward.
