The latest wave of speculation appears to have started with a random Twitter account named JCup2013. That account began going viral with unsubstantiated claims about Punk, and various wrestling news outlets subsequently platformed the story. The claims themselves remain unsubstantiated.
Reported WWE and AEW Context
There is reportedly no heat on Punk within WWE. Separately, some in AEW believe the burned bridge between Punk and that promotion could be repaired, if needed.
Punk's Recent Run and Absence
Background matters here. This is not the typical baseless off-period chatter that follows most roster members. Punk is not a typical WWE performer. His history of leaving WWE, going on hiatus, returning to AEW, torching bridges there, and eventually coming back to WWE speaks for itself. Lawsuits and related legal fallout have been part of that broader arc as well.
Strip the name away and the timeline still tracks. A 47-year-old wrestler worked roughly three years non-stop. A serious injury factored into that run. He carried the biggest promotion on the planet on his back while the other main event scene involved Jelly Roll, Pat McAfee, and outside meddling. His arc capped off with a WrestleMania main event before he got a break.
Adding Punk's name back into that picture makes the situation more dramatic, but not wildly so. There is nothing shocking about him getting time off before a return that sets up a SummerSlam feud. From there, he could work through the next year's WrestleMania and whatever program that card presents.
Age, Schedule, and Post-Retirement Plans
It is already understood that Punk's age is a factor and that he is not going to wrestle forever. Part-timing once or twice per year in a Brock Lesnar style does not appear to be his thing. It is also understood that he wants to do something involving NXT and/or the Performance Center as a trainer after in-ring retirement.
That established context is why random Twitter accounts and thin down-period reporting have stirred the conversation again, even as Punk sits out following his WrestleMania 42 main event and the break that followed.
