CM Punk Reportedly Set for SmackDown Move Ahead of WWE Return

CM Punk is expected to join SmackDown when he returns to WWE television, with Cody Rhodes named as a potential feud partner as roster shakeups continue across both brands.

CM Punk has dominated conversation inside and outside WWE this week, and his long term place on the roster appears to be taking clearer shape. After early week rumors painted him as unhappy and possibly on the way out, those claims have largely been walked back. The latest direction points toward a significant brand shift for the former World Heavyweight Champion as WWE maps out his return to TV.

Punk is expected to switch brands ahead of a major feud when he comes back to television. He is reportedly slated to join SmackDown, a move framed as a way to balance the rosters. Punk vs. Cody Rhodes is also being discussed as a potential future creative direction for the company, though WWE has not officially confirmed any of it.

Roster movement across Raw and SmackDown

WWE has moved away from holding an official draft, but the top of both cards has changed repeatedly over the past year. The Raw and SmackDown rosters look drastically different now than they did at the start of 2026.

Recent brand moves cited in the current reporting include:

  • Jacob Fatu moving to Raw
  • Rhea Ripley transferring to SmackDown
  • Gunther transferring to SmackDown
  • Oba Femi moving to Raw
  • Trick Williams moving to SmackDown

Additional NXT call ups and roster shuffles have landed on both brands alongside those names.

Gunther, Reigns, and the post WrestleMania pivot

A major domino in the current landscape fell when WWE dropped a planned post WrestleMania feud between Gunther and Roman Reigns. Gunther instead moved to SmackDown and immediately set his sights on WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. Reigns, meanwhile has been locked into a rivalry with Fatu as WWE has reignited The Bloodline saga.

What a SmackDown move would signal for Punk

If Punk does land on SmackDown as expected, it would undercut the idea that he is on the outs with WWE or sitting off television because of major contract or creative friction. It would also add weight to the belief that Rhodes vs. Punk is on the table, whether that match arrives as soon as SummerSlam or stretches toward WrestleMania 43 next year.

Rhodes and Punk already stoked that angle on the post WrestleMania 42 edition of Raw. Their in ring segment drew a strong reaction and did little to slow talk that the two would collide in the near term. On paper, it ranks among the biggest marquee bouts WWE could build right now.

Both men left WWE, spent time in AEW, and returned years later to play central roles in the company’s push over the past several years. A world title match between the two at a major premium live event such as SummerSlam would line up with that shared history.

Why SmackDown fits Punk’s current spot on the card

Even without a firm timeline for Punk vs. Rhodes, a SmackDown transfer is framed as a practical need for Punk’s booking. He has been a prominent Raw fixture since his 2023 WWE return, while two of his biggest rivals, Reigns and Seth Rollins, remain entrenched in Raw’s main event picture.

On SmackDown, Punk could cross paths again with Gunther and Drew McIntyre, pursue a full feud with Rhodes, or work with rising names such as Trick Williams, Carmelo Hayes, and Ricky Saints.

Return timing and Chicago Raw

There is no set date for Punk’s WWE return at this stage. Raw is scheduled for Chicago on July 6, a market that has long been tied to Punk’s career and could serve as a natural stage for him to reappear and jump start a main event storyline.
