While there were recent reports of minor issues between Punk and WWE, multiple sources have indicated that the situation was simply a matter of working through creative differences. These sources also clarified that Punk's absence was not due to any backstage heat or deeper problems within the company.
Furthermore, a source at the Allstate Arena, where the show will take place has heavily advertised Punk for the event and has not been informed of any changes to his status. This planned appearance in Chicago is said to have been a long-standing objective.
Rumors had also suggested that Punk might move to SmackDown to engage in a SummerSlam feud with Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship. However, current Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn is slated to defend his title against Rhodes on July 6.
