The storyline started on ESPN's First Take, when Danhausen confronted Stephen A. Smith and "cursed" Smith and the Knicks by proxy. The Knicks lost their next game immediately after that interaction. A fan later asked Danhausen to lift the curse, and he officially "uncursed" the team. He also "cursed" the Cleveland Cavaliers during the Eastern Conference Finals. The Knicks then went on a 13-game winning streak through the title.
Danhausen is a WWE superstar who appears weekly on both Raw and SmackDown. The "delightful ghoul" collects human teeth, terrorizes fellow superstars, and "curses" his enemies. He made his WWE debut at Elimination Chamber in February, attended multiple Knicks games and events through the Finals run, and was invited to the parade.
The Knicks lost only one game during the NBA Finals, Game 3. After that loss, Danhausen posted that he was not to blame for the night.
Listen, we don't blame Danhausen for anything in this city. Don't curse them, and you can do no wrong here
One Knicks fan wrote in response to Danhausen's post. A Spurs fan added:
As a Spurs fan, it isn't on you.
DANHAUSEN KNEW THEY BELIEVED. Thank you @jalenbrunson1 @KarlTowns and @FallonTonight for confirming Danhausens cursing and uncursing powers to the world.@WWE @espn
Danhausen posted that message on June 16, thanking Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and The Tonight Show for playing along with the bit. Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that same Monday, Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mike Brown were asked about Danhausen and the "curse." Brunson, a WWE fan, replied:
At first, I was a little skeptical, but you have to believe now.
Danhausen also took photos with Ben Stiller and Cardi B during the season.
