During a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Johnson, who voices Maui in both animated films and the upcoming live-action remake, stated, "Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes." He also noted that the focus would first be on the live-action adaptation, which is slated for release on July 10. Johnson further revealed that writers Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who were involved in the previous installments are attached to pen "Moana 3."
The original animated film, released in 2016, followed Moana's journey to save her island. It grossed over $684 million worldwide. The sequel, "Moana 2," originally conceived as a Disney+ series was reworked into a feature film and achieved significant success, earning $1.059 billion globally and receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.
The live-action remake, with Thomas Kail directing, will feature Catherine Laga'aia as Moana, though Auliʻi Cravalho voiced the character in the animated features. Johnson returns as Maui for the remake.
