Dwayne Johnson has weighed in on the social media buzz surrounding the wig worn by his character Maui in the upcoming live-action remake of Disney's 'Moana.' The film is set to release this Friday, a decade after the original animated version.
Upon the release of the first teaser trailer earlier this year, many viewers commented on Johnson's wig, which quickly became a subject of memes across social media platforms. Johnson acknowledged the online reaction, stating that he found the situation humorous.
I laughed so ******* hard, when we first came out and people saw me in a wig for the first time, and they memed me. The internet did the internet. It was very, very funny. I was like, 'OK, it's alright, just see the movie, wait till you see it'.
The former professional wrestler maintained that he did not regularly wear the Maui wig outside of filming. However, he playfully suggested that he might have worn it in a private setting at a late hour.
I can maybe confirm that I wore it at around two o'clock in the morning on a Saturday. Just saying. I had a lot of tequila.
The original 'Moana' film, released a decade ago, starred Auliʻi Cravalho as the titular heroine and Johnson as the demigod Maui. The film has since been recognized as a modern Disney classic, frequently appearing among the most-streamed titles. A sequel, 'Moana 2,' was released in 2024, featuring newcomer Catherine Laga'aia in the lead role. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the first film's music, contributed an additional song to the remake, having not been involved in the animated sequel.
