Dwayne Johnson, reprising his role as the demigod Maui in the live-action adaptation of Disney's Moana, and co-star Catherine Laga’aia have discussed the film's updated approach to its heroine, aiming to connect with the younger Gen Alpha demographic.
The stars highlighted how the coming-of-age story has evolved to reflect modern aspirations, moving away from traditional princess archetypes. Johnson, who also produces the film, stated at CinemaCon that "The hero of our story is not a princess, she's a warrior." He further elaborated on the story's universal appeal, noting that "Our values of Polynesian culture and community are not just specific to us; they're universal. Everyone can relate to the young girl or young boy who wants more out of life."
Laga’aia, who portrays Moana, discussed how the film's themes are being adapted for Gen Alpha, a generation that has grown up with smartphones and social media. She suggested that engaging this audience requires authenticity and genuine connection. Reflecting on her own journey in securing the role, which reportedly involved an audition process with over 32,000 hopefuls, Laga’aia shared, "I feel like I've learned as much about myself as Moana did herself on her journey."
The young actor also emphasized Moana's compassion as a key takeaway. "I think something I learnt from Moana is being compassionate and empathetic when times are hard for you," Laga’aia said. "She doesn't go to anger or aggression; she goes straight to her compassion and empathy, from which she really works herself. That's such an incredible skill to have. I am trying to learn them."
Disney's live-action Moana is scheduled for release in India on July 10th, with showings in both English and Hindi.
