Speaking with E! News, Johnson conveyed his profound feelings about the moment. "The emotions I’m feeling are gratitude and also, I’m careful with this word, but just real pride," Johnson stated. He emphasized his pride in seeing Polynesian culture represented on a global stage like the big screen with a company as significant as Disney.
It means a lot to me that I’m able to uplift them in my own small way as their dad. But also, and we have this talk daily, which is, ‘Hey, you belong in every room, and you belong at every table. And I’m here to support you. When things go sideways, I’m here to support you.'
Describing himself as a "proud girl dad," Johnson admitted to being emotional over his children's performance. He also specifically lauded Laga'aia, calling her "our Moana" and noting the pressure on her for her first film role. "And I was so proud of her, and it was so cool to see this Hollywood Bowl," he added.
Johnson also recalled his daughters' initial reaction to his appearance as Maui in the live-action adaptation, noting they found his hair jarring. "The first time they saw me as Maui, they were like, ‘Oh,’" he previously told E! News. "It was jarring for them for maybe 10 minutes. Just to see me with hair, and I get it, it’s a lot of hair."
Disney's "Moana," released in 2016 has achieved significant success, grossing over $687 million worldwide and earning Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. The film is scheduled for a July 10 release.
