Dwayne Johnson's Jumanji Movies Deemed Superior to Original

A critical re-evaluation suggests that Dwayne Johnson's Jumanji films, "Welcome to the Jungle" and "The Next Level," surpass the 1995 original starring Robin Williams.

However, the overwhelmingly positive reception to "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" prompted a closer look, leading to the realization that the rebooted franchise is not only enjoyable but also significantly funnier and more effective than its predecessor.

Premise and Execution

The original 1995 "Jumanji" centered on two children in 1969 who discover an ancient board game. After one child is mysteriously sucked into the game, he returns 26 years later when a new pair of children begin playing. Jungle elements then manifest in their suburban reality, and the adult Alan Parrish, played by Robin Williams, must help the children finish the game to return the creatures to their contained world.

In contrast, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" involves four teenagers who find an old video game console and the "Jumanji" cartridge. Upon starting the game, they are transported into the virtual jungle, inhabiting the bodies of their chosen avatars, which often clash with their own personalities. The group must then complete the game to escape back to their own lives.

While the original film's premise of a mysterious board game with supernatural powers is recognized as more intriguing and magical, the reboot is commended for its clever reinvention. The true divergence, and where the reboot excels over the original, lies in its execution.

Technical and Performance Shortcomings

The original "Jumanji" faltered in its depiction of jungle animals invading suburbia due to what is described as "truly horrendous CGI." While the CG stampede was deemed acceptable, other effects, such as a lion that fluctuated between looking convincing and unconvincing, and especially the "fake-looking" monkeys, detracted significantly from the film's believability. The article notes that much of this could have been achieved with animatronics or trained animals, common techniques at the time, suggesting that computer graphics were not yet advanced enough for director Joe Johnston's ambitions.

Conversely, the CGI in the reboot, while not perfect is considered to be effective enough not to distract from the narrative. The assessment also touches on the performance of Robin Williams, a beloved comedic figure. Despite a deep affection for Williams and his work, the original "Jumanji" is seen as not fully capitalizing on his comedic depth, unlike films such as "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Aladdin." Furthermore, the original film reportedly lacked the dramatic weight to fully utilize his talents in more serious moments.
