Dwayne Johnson is set to reprise his role as the shape-shifting Demigod Maui in the upcoming live-action film "Moana," slated for release this July. Ahead of the film's premiere, Johnson shared insights into the most demanding aspects of bringing the beloved character back to the big screen.
In a recent interview, Johnson addressed whether dance or action choreography posed a greater difficulty. He admitted that the timing required for dance sequences, particularly those involving music and lyrics, proved to be more challenging.
I would say the timing of dance choreography is a little bit more challenging because there's music involved. It's singing and making sure that the words and the lyrics are driving the moves and the steps. And then there's a partner. I have a partner for my number, You're Welcome, which is Catherine, so a lot is happening, and it's a bit more challenging.
While Johnson is accustomed to physically demanding roles, he noted that the choreography for "Moana" felt different. He acknowledged the pressure of stepping up to iconic and beloved songs for the live-action adaptation, emphasizing the need for a high level of performance and a strong partner.
The 2026 live-action adaptation of "Moana" follows the story of the adventurous teenager from Motunui as she embarks on a journey to save her people. Guided by the ocean, she finds the shapeshifting demigod Maui, and together they face mythical creatures to restore the heart of Te Fiti.
The film features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, with a score composed by Mancina. "Moana" is scheduled to be released in theaters across India on July 10, 2026.
