Dwayne Johnson may be transitioning from Black Adam to a major Marvel Cinematic Universe role. Recent rumors suggest the actor, who previously starred as the DC anti-hero is in discussions for a significant villain part within Marvel Studios.
The speculation emerged from a report on X by scooper My Time to Shine Hello, which stated, "The Rock is up to play Apocalypse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe." Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed these reports.
Apocalypse in the MCU
Apocalypse, also known as En Sabah Nur is a foundational figure in Marvel's mutant lore, first appearing in X-Factor #5 in 1986. Created by Louise Simonson and Jackson Guice, the character is known for his immense power, the assembly of his Four Horsemen, and a philosophy centered on the survival of the fittest. Oscar Isaac previously portrayed Apocalypse in the 2016 film "X-Men: Apocalypse." Any future MCU iteration is expected to be a complete reinvention of the character.
Kevin Feige has previously spoken about the integration of mutants into the MCU, hinting at recognizable X-Men characters appearing in upcoming films. He also indicated that the "Secret Wars" storyline "really leads us into a new age of mutants and of the X-Men."
Previous reports from The InSneider suggested that Marvel planned to begin filming an X-Men reboot this year, with a targeted release in 2027, following "Avengers: Secret Wars." This reboot is not anticipated to be an origin story, potentially positioning Apocalypse as an already established threat within the MCU.
Johnson's involvement with DC concluded with the 2022 film "Black Adam," which did not launch the planned franchise extensions. His live-action adaptation of Disney's "Moana" is also set to release soon.
