'Free Byrd' will reportedly feature Johnson as a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman, drawing comparisons to Evel Knievel. The character has been diagnosed with dementia and, to secure his legacy, plans one final, dangerous jump while keeping his condition secret from his brother and others.
Johnson calls the film "emblematic of life’s sacred beauty, as well as life’s harsh and callous reality."
The film will be directed by Greg Kwedar, known for 'Sing Sing,' who will also rewrite the screenplay. The original script was penned by Jon Boyer and later revised by Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson. Production is being handled by Gil Netter, Kwedar, Clint Bentley for Ethos, and Johnson for Seven Bucks Productions, with Fifth Season serving as the production company.
Upcoming Projects for Dwayne Johnson
In addition to 'Free Byrd,' Johnson has several other projects on the horizon. He will appear in the live-action adaptation of Disney's 'Moana,' reprising his role as the demigod Maui. He is also involved in the animated 'Moana 3.' This holiday season, Johnson will return as Dr. Smolder Bravestone in 'Jumanji: Open World,' the third film in that series.
Furthermore, he is set to reprise his role as Luke Hobbs in 'Fast Forever,' the concluding chapter of the 'Fast and Furious' saga. Johnson also plans to star as the Chicken Man in 'Lizard Music,' an adaptation of Daniel Pinkwater's novel, directed by Bennie Safdie.
'Free Byrd' is currently in development with no release date announced.
