Australian newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia stars in the title role of Moana. The evening honored the Pacific cultures that inspired the story, featuring a performance by Opetaia Foaʻi and his band Te Vaka, accompanied by Jaedyn Randell and the Signature Choir. Rolling Stone AU/NZ contributor Sosefina Fuamoli hosted the event.
The live-action adaptation follows Moana as she embarks on a quest with Maui to restore prosperity to her people. The film is directed by Thomas Kail, with Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda producing. Original "Moana" star Auliʻi Cravalho is an executive producer.
Music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina is featured in the film, with Mancina also composing the score. The soundtrack includes the new song "Along the Way," written by Miranda and performed by Cravalho, Lagaʻaia, and Johnson.
The "Moana" live-action film is set to be released in Australian and New Zealand cinemas on July 8th.
