ESPN is reportedly looking to maximize the value of its WWE Premium Live Event (PLE) distribution, requesting that WWE add more matches to the paid portion of its shows. WWE PLEs moved from Peacock to ESPN in September of last year, now airing domestically on ESPN Unlimited and internationally on Netflix.

The strategy for most of the year, including WrestleMania 42 has seen the first two matches of WWE PLEs broadcast on ESPN's cable channel, with the remainder airing exclusively on the Unlimited streaming service. A new report from WrestleVotes Radio indicates that ESPN has put forth additional requests concerning the matches that follow the initial free hour.

ESPN's Request for Night of Champions

According to WrestleVotes, ESPN approached WWE with a proposal to incorporate more matches into Night of Champions to strengthen the paid content. Historically, PLEs not considered among the "big four" typically featured five matches. When ESPN began airing them on its cable channel, two matches aired there, with the remaining three exclusively on Unlimited. However, a shift occurred at Night of Champions, where two matches were shown on ESPN, and four were reserved for Unlimited subscribers.

SummerSlam and Ongoing Storylines

The next WWE PLE is SummerSlam, scheduled to take place in Minneapolis on August 1 and August 2. Leading up to SummerSlam, several significant developments have occurred. At Night of Champions, Oba Femi won the King of the Ring tournament and Iyo Sky captured the Queen of the Ring. Both earned opportunities for their respective world titles at SummerSlam. Sky immediately announced her intention to challenge Liv Morgan for the title.

Oba Femi, however, opted for a different path, choosing to face Brock Lesnar for a third time at SummerSlam in a Hell in a Cell match instead of taking his title opportunity. This decision has left the Raw men's world title match open, prompting Seth Rollins to challenge Roman Reigns for the championship on a recent episode of WWE Raw.

Additionally, Sami Zayn delivered a major upset at Night of Champions by winning the Undisputed WWE Championship. Zayn's victory is expected to influence SummerSlam plans, which will likely still involve Cody Rhodes.
