FTR Reveals What the Final Straw Was in Their WWE Run

Cash Wheeler says the WWE Draft split that broke up FTR's planned Randy Orton alliance was the moment he and Dax Harwood decided to ask for their release.

On the newest episode of Late Night Grin, Wheeler pointed to a major creative pivot that stunted and abruptly ended the Orton team. He said the draft sent FTR to SmackDown while Orton went to Raw, and that separation told them WWE had no real plans left for the duo.

"I think that was the final straw for us when we knew we wanted to ask for our release was when they drafted us to SmackDown and Randy to Raw at that point. And we knew if they killed that, that they didn't really have any expectations or plans for us. And when they drafted us to separate shows, we were like, 'Alright, yeah. I think that the writing's on the wall here as far as what our ceiling is ever gonna be.'"

Wheeler said he does not regret leaving for AEW, though he saw a lot of potential in the Orton team. Orton was a big proponent of the act and was ready for it to be pushed.

FTR debuted in AEW in May 2020. Together, Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler have the AEW Men's World Tag Team Championships on three occasions and had standout matches against The Briscoe Brothers, The Young Bucks, and Adam Copeland and Christian Cage.

Prior to AEW, Harwood and Wheeler were three-time WWE tag team champions as The Revival and the NXT tag titles twice. The Revival was a critical act in the formation of NXT and the black-and-gold era.

FTR has not appeared on AEW television since losing the AEW Men's World Tag Team Championships to Adam Copeland and Christian Cage at Double or Nothing in an I Quit Street Fight. Copeland and Cage will defend those titles against The Dogs next week during the Forbidden Door PPV. A return to television for FTR has not been announced.

WWE has lost strong tag teams recently, including The New Day, who left, and the Motor City Machine Guns, who were released from their contract.
