John Cena, a prominent figure in WWE history has voiced his belief that authenticity is paramount in professional wrestling, even more so than the chemistry between competitors.
Speaking on "First We Feast," Cena elaborated on this viewpoint, explaining that while chemistry can be fun and allow for pure physical creativity, it's the audience's ability to connect with genuine characters that ultimately resonates. "If you are unauthentic, the audience can see through bulls**t. Authenticity, believability, character is the most important metric. All the other stuff is a bonus," Cena stated.
He acknowledged that strong chemistry, seen in pairings like Ric Flair and Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat or The Rock and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, can indeed lead to memorable matches and long-term feuds. However, Cena suggested that such pairings don't always guarantee audience connection if the core of authenticity is missing.
Cena, who famously navigated a complex relationship with the WWE Universe, found his own way to connect by remaining true to himself. This mastery of authenticity, he believes was instrumental in earning respect during his recent farewell tour.
