Johnson elaborated on his stance, saying, “What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep, need, not want, the main thing. And the main thing for me… is creating. It’s art. It’s storytelling.” He added, “I’ve learned I’m going to keep my politics to myself… Politics is omnipresent and it’s forever. I don’t like it. I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. I hate all the bullshit that comes with it.”
This position has not gone unnoticed. Star Trek legend George Takei commented on Threads, stating, “Silence is complicity.” Actor Wil Wheaton also weighed in, replying, “So disappointing to find out he is such a coward.”
Johnson’s decision follows his previous endorsement of Joe Biden in the 2020 US election, an endorsement he later admitted regretting. Speaking to Fox News in 2024, he remarked that the endorsement “caused an incredible amount of division in our country,” and declared, “There will be no endorsement… I will keep my politics to myself. It is between me and the ballot box.”
Johnson is not the only notable figure in Hollywood to reconsider public engagement with political commentary. Jennifer Lawrence recently told The New York Times that she has been reducing her political commentary, questioning its effectiveness and observing, “We are so divided.” However, some stars continue to voice their opinions publicly despite potential repercussions, such as actor Melissa Barrera, who was dropped from the Scream franchise in 2023 after posting pro-Palestine content, and Mark Ruffalo, who has remained consistently vocal on political and humanitarian issues.
