Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has detailed a painful health scare he kept hidden from his wife, Lauren Hashian, even as the condition lingered for several days without improvement.
Johnson said he felt a painful lump on one of his testicles and chose not to tell anyone what he was going through, including Hashian, until he had a clearer picture of whether there was cause for concern.
I didn't even tell Lauren [Hashian]. I didn't want to worry her before I knew if it was anything to even worry about.
Johnson stressed that he is not dying of cancer.
By the way: I'm fine. But I didn't know that then, and the thing was really painful.
After consulting a doctor, Johnson was told the lump was probably epididymitis, an inflammation of the tube at the back of the testicle that stores sperm. He still needed an ultrasound to rule out anything more serious.
That ultrasound was delayed by a day because of a "Jumanji" event he was participating in with Kevin Hart. Johnson said he had to live with the uncertainty for twenty-four hours while staying on all day, joking around, and making speeches.
So I had to live with that for those twenty-four hours, not knowing, and I had to be on all day, joking around, making speeches.
The doctor's initial assessment proved correct. Johnson was diagnosed with epididymitis.
Johnson also addressed strain in his marriage with Hashian while filming the new live-action "Moana." He said they were going through difficult personal issues during that period.
We're going through our stuff. And you know that, hey, the end goal here is, we're going to anchor in even stronger and make this thing work. The heartache of it from the moment you wake up and you know: I have to face this, and we have to face it together, when we decide to face it together, which we did, but first I had to go on set, and this character of Maui is a joy bomb.
Johnson indicated that he and Hashian worked through the rough patch and have made their marriage work.
