Dwayne Johnson, known to diehard fans for his legendary run as The Rock in WWE and now as an A-list Hollywood star has recently been called out by actor Will Wheaton for his apolitical stance. Wheaton, known for his role in Stand By Me and Star Trek, expressed disappointment over Johnson's decision to refrain from public political commentary, leading Johnson to articulate his reasoning.
During his prime in professional wrestling, Johnson solidified his status as "the most electrifying man in sports entertainment" before a stellar in-ring career concluded with his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. His transition to the big screen, starring in films like Jumanji: The Next Level and Black Adam has maintained his global celebrity.
So disappointing to find out he is such a coward.
Johnson addressed his shift in approach during an interview with Esquire, where he explained his reluctance to publicly weigh in on political matters. His primary concern is preventing his personal political views from overshadowing his professional work.
What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep, need, not want, the main thing the main thing.
He further elaborated on what he considers his "main thing" to be.
The main thing for me, the thing that in the morning I swing my legs out of bed and I run towards is creating. It's art. It's storytelling.
Johnson confirmed his resolve to keep his political opinions private.
I've learned I'm going to keep my politics to myself. There are moments when, hey, there's nothing we can't talk about. If I'm wrong, I'll tell you I'm wrong. Or if I feel like I got a leg up and this is the right way to go, I'll share it with you.
Johnson has publicly expressed a general aversion to the political landscape.
Politics is omnipresent, and it's forever. I don't like it, I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. Hate all the bulls--- that comes with it.
While Johnson publicly endorsed Joe Biden during the 2020 election, he stated ahead of the 2024 presidential race that he would not endorse another candidate. In contrast, Wheaton is a vocal critic of President Trump and campaigned for Kamala Harris during the 2024 election.
