A massive American flag from the WWE Headquarters building in Stamford, Connecticut, was torn from its mast during a severe thunderstorm on Saturday night, resulting in significant power outages across the region. The incident began when the detached flag struck a nearby transformer, triggering an explosion that initially caused a power outage for 5,000 residents in the immediate area.
\nEversource Energy responded promptly to the initial disruption, successfully rerouting power to the affected customers. However, the situation escalated considerably on Sunday. As Eversource Energy crews worked to remove the expansive flag, shifting winds during this process caused the flag to again interfere with the local power infrastructure. This led to a second, larger outage that impacted 40,000 customers in the Greenwich and Stamford areas. Following this second incident, Eversource Energy crews are actively working to restore power for an additional 12,000 customers who remain affected.
The American flag involved in this series of incidents, flown at the WWE Headquarters, measured an impressive 3,000 square feet. WWE did not respond to requests for comment regarding the situation.
