Speaking in a recent interview, Cage recounted his time in WWE developmental between 2008 and 2009. He stated that he expected to be promoted to either Raw or SmackDown during that period. However, the outcome was a release from the company.

Cage, who re-signed with AEW in 2024, cited stability and security as key factors in his decision-making process between AEW and WWE. He mentioned that he holds no grudges regarding his WWE release and acknowledged a lingering sense of "what if" about a potential WrestleMania moment.

The AEW star also expressed a sense of pride in building his success without the benefit of the "WWE rub," noting this as a significant part of the context behind his choice to focus on his current career path.
