George Takei took to Threads, stating, “Silence is complicity,” in response to Johnson’s stance. Wil Wheaton echoed this sentiment on the platform, replying to Takei’s post and calling Johnson’s decision “deeply disappointing.”
So disappointing to find out he is such a coward.
Johnson, who is currently promoting the live-action Moana film globally, shared his perspective in the Esquire interview. He explained that he prioritizes his creative endeavors above political discussions.
What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep, need, not want, the main thing. Storytelling drives me every morning when I get out of bed.
The actor also expressed his general disdain for the current political climate.
Politics is omnipresent and it’s forever. I don’t like it. I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. I hate all the bullshit that comes with it.
Despite his public stance, Johnson indicated an openness to private discussions on disagreements among public figures. This decision to remain politically private comes after a previous endorsement of Joe Biden for president in 2020. Johnson later stated in 2024 that the endorsement had divided his fanbase.
At this level of influence, I will keep my politics to myself. It is between me and the ballot box.
Jennifer Lawrence also faced similar scrutiny last fall while promoting Die My Love. She previously told The New York Times that celebrity political endorsements do not significantly influence voters, opting instead to channel her beliefs through her production company’s projects.
