This championship clash was solidified following events on the June 11th edition of TNA Thursday Night iMPACT. The show featured the reigning TNA World Champion, Mike Santana, successfully defending his title against Eric Young in the opening contest.

Santana secured the win over Young after the returning Ricky Sosa distracted Young, allowing the champion to capitalize and retain his gold. He maintained his hold on the TNA World Championship as Slammiversary approaches.

Post-match, Nic Nemeth made his presence felt, emerging with his Call Your Shot Gauntlet trophy in hand and already equipped in his ring gear. Going into the show, Nemeth had stated his intention to call his shot for a World Title match at Slammiversary on June 28th.

Nemeth helped Santana to his feet but decided to stick to his word rather than calling his shot immediately. He then officially challenged for the World Title at the upcoming Slammiversary pay-per-view.
