Khan made the announcement via an X (formerly Twitter) live stream ahead of the show, bringing Sareee into the stream to address her removal from the tournament. Sareee has been battling neck issues. Doctors, including her personal doctor and doctors in Japan had previously stated she would be cleared. However, AEW performs very thorough medical exams, and AEW doctors ultimately did not feel comfortable clearing Sareee.
"We had really been excited, because the doctors of Sareee had said she's going to be cleared, from her own personal doctor and the doctors in Japan, we got all the clearances and we thought we were ready to go. But, we do very thorough medical exams here in AEW... The AEW doctors today say they do not feel comfortable clearing Sareee and to have such a top star here unable to compete is unfortunate, but we really love her wrestling and we want her to be in AEW again and to keep coming back."
Speaking through a translator during the live stream, Sareee expressed that she came to AEW wanting to compete in the tournament and was very sorry and disappointed. She stated that if given another chance, she would return and compete in AEW. Khan reassured Sareee that she was always welcome in AEW.
Following Sareee's removal, Khan announced that Maya World would be taking her place against Skye Blue in the quarterfinals of the Owen Hart Foundation Cup tournament. Khan addressed the circumstances surrounding Maya World's participation, noting that she recently announced the death of her brother on social media. Despite this personal tragedy, Khan said Maya World wanted to be at "Dynamite" and with the locker room.
"Given the situation, I think it would be a great opportunity to have Skye Blue vs. Maya World in the quarterfinals."
The quarterfinal match between Skye Blue and Maya World is now set to proceed on "AEW Dynamite: Summer Blockbuster."
