A massive flag that usually flies over World Wrestling Entertainment's headquarters in Downtown Stamford is being blamed for causing power outages in Connecticut. The Stamford Fire Department confirmed that strong winds on Saturday ripped the 3,000-square-foot flag from atop the WWE building, sending it into electrical wires near the Metro-North train station.

This incident initiated a brief power outage on Saturday. However, a more prolonged interruption affected residents and businesses throughout Sunday as crews worked to safely remove the entangled flag. Eversource, the utility company, reported that the flag had blown into a transmission line.

The initial impact caused approximately 5,000 customers to lose power, with service largely restored by Sunday morning. However, as Eversource crews were on site preparing to address the issue, a sudden gust of wind shifted the flag once more, leading to a second, more extensive outage.

This second disruption affected around 40,000 additional customers for most of Sunday afternoon. The impact extended beyond Stamford, reaching homes and businesses in surrounding areas, including a GNC store in Greenwich.

"Definitely bizarre, to see the flag wrapped around there, and for it to cause that. It's pretty wild," said store owner Michael Saluzzi.

Eversource confirmed that all affected customers have since had their power restored. A spokesperson for the utility commented on the efforts:

"Our crews worked as quickly and safely as possible to remove the flag, and all impacted customers have since been restored."

The City of Stamford said it was in touch with WWE officials to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and to discuss measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.
