Fans were quick to react to the dramatic change, with many initially misinterpreting it as a sudden hairstyle decision. However, Cena has been transparent about addressing hair thinning and revealed his commitment to medical solutions after years of gradual hair loss and public comments during his WWE appearances.

Cena's Hair Restoration Journey

The 49-year-old is undergoing FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), a minimally invasive procedure designed to relocate healthy hair follicles to thinning regions of the scalp. The aim of this treatment is to encourage natural and lasting hair growth over time. His recent social media post, which captured widespread attention is part of the essential healing and preparation phase that typically follows the FUE procedure.

Cena has emphasized that this is a long-term process, not an immediate transformation. He shared that his hair journey commenced in 2024, spurred by consistent chants and signs from wrestling crowds, including those that read “the bald John Cena.” These fan reactions ultimately prompted him to explore medical options.

I saw their signs that said ‘The bald John Cena,’ They pushed me into going to see what my options were. I now have a routine: red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, shampoo, conditioner, and I also got a hair transplant last November.

Cena has also discussed how societal stigma surrounding hair loss led him to delay addressing the issue earlier. While shaving the head is not always a requirement for FUE, Cena chose to maintain a closely cropped look to optimize the transplant process, stating he “went all in” on his commitment to the best possible outcome. He attributes the experience to an improved sense of confidence, which he says has even positively impacted his acting career.

Retirement and Hollywood Focus

Beyond his personal medical journey, Cena recently concluded his legendary wrestling career. His final match in WWE saw him suffer a submission loss to Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event. This match capped off a retirement tour that featured numerous appearances and matches, solidifying his career as one of the most iconic in WWE history.

With his full-time wrestling commitments behind him, Cena is now fully dedicated to his Hollywood pursuits. He has already made notable appearances in major films such as The Suicide Squad and Ricky Stanicky . Currently, he is working on Matchbox: The Movie, where he plays a character named Sean. The film is slated for release in October 2026.
